Tai Chi at the Golden Lion Academy in Berwick, Rowville and Murrumbeena - Melbourne Australia - will keep you healthy for life. Our classes will help you reduce stress, improve your memory, prevent illness and keep fit.

You’ll strengthen your immune system, improve your strength, coordination and balance with our programme, which consists of yang style bare hands forms, breathing and meditation techniques, various strength, flexibility, balance and coordination exercises, weaponry such as the tai chi sword and fan, push hands, self defence applications and pressure points for both healing and self defence.

You may even want to compete in regular tai chi tournaments which are held internationally and locally, or become certified to teach and be graded.

All these skills can be learnt by males and females, from 13 year old teenagers to 80 year old adults. Our gentle low impact programme allows you to continue exercising as you age. This means you’ll continue to reap the mental and physical health benefits that our programme gives you.

At the Golden Lion Academy we believe that integrated mind and body fitness is a way to good health, and that Tai Chi Chuan is a system of exercise and philosophy ideally designed to achieve this integration and fitness.

A natural way to fitness and health, improving health, healing and wellbeing is the aim of this ancient art which is essentially gentle mind-body exercise performed in a tranquil, graceful way to keep both your mind and body fit. The tai chi movements are purposefully performed with slow, continuous and controlled techniques so as to protect your joints while at the same time promoting relaxation, concentration, balance and coordination.

A recent major American research project has shown that tai chi not only improves many aspects of your physical health, but it may also improve your psychological well-being by reducing stress, anxiety, depression and mood disturbance while increasing your self esteem.

In the area of fitness, you'll see an improvement in flexibility, strength, bone density, and in the condition of your heart and circulatory system.

You'll increase your resistance to illness and generate a greater feeling of well-being through regular practice. You'll promote normal circulation of blood, fluids and Chi life force energy throughout your body. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine's pressure points for healing, when circulation of these vital substances becomes blocked or impaired, disease can result.

The spirit of tai chi

In the history of this Chinese martial art, early practitioners have designed it to achieve longevity and specific benefits to the mind and body in a number of ways...

  • First, it is a powerful system of self defence - a very straightforward method of preserving oneself physically

  • Second, it operates within the principles of Chinese Traditional Medicine to enhance health and healing through the coordination of movement and breathing

  • Thirdly, the practice of this art is, in itself, a form of meditation, restoring your inner balance and harmony, and soothing your nervous system.
