The Benefits of Tai Chi for the Correction of Back Pain

Below is a tai chi (TC) report by Doug Davidson, a Golden Lion student since 1997...

... "I started TC about five years ago after many years of lower back pain. At times I had attended a chiropractor three times a week at a cost of over $30 per visit. After a while these sessions were having less effect and I was referred by my doctor to a specialist who took X-Rays and a CT Scan. He was horrified at the damage done to my back and attributed some of this to poor chiropractic services. He recommended a physiotherapist rather than a chiropractor for when the pain reocurred – and it did.

The physiotherapist was gentler and after many sessions got me upright and not stooped or walking in pain. Some mornings I would wake and not be able to walk or go to work and sometimes this went on for days.

The physiotherapist recommended more walking, swimming and gentle exercise. I had seen advertisements for TC in the local paper and asked him about these. He explained a little bit about TC and recommended that I try it.

I then came to Golden Lion Academy at Rowville one night after work. I have never been back to a chiropractor or physiotherapist since that day.

That poor physiotherapist. I came across him at Knox City shops recently and he remembered me. I had been one of his best customers, after all. I’d wager that he never recommends TC again.

I am not a fit person, and I don’t believe that I’m all that good at TC. Just ask my classmates when I lose my balance! But the personal benefits that I have found from regular weekly classes (now twice weekly classes) have been phenomenal for my health.

I haven’t even had to visit my doctor more than twice in the past five years. I still need to find more time to exercise, but I am able to self-correct sciatic pain in my legs and lower back with tai chi movements.

Pretty amazing huh?! "

Thanks Doug for your story. We are sure many other people with back pain will think about taking up TC classes for their joint pain.
