So let's begin with this contribution by Si Jie Chris Everett.

Tai Chi and The Golden Lion Community

Over the past weeks, we have heard a lot of talk about "community”. Small towns with a strong sense of “community” are working together to rebuild their “community”. In every news story about the fires, the word “community “seems to come up.

When I started thinking about this word “community”, I realised that it not only described the reality of interconnectedness of people living/ working/playing in a particular town or district, but it also had an emotional side to it. This is expressed as: a sense of belonging, caring for each other, sharing happy and sad times together, and so on.

I think that there is a perception that in the larger towns there is less of this “strong sense of community” that smaller towns enjoy. However I think that is not the case. We create our own smaller communities within the larger towns/cities and the Golden Lion is one such community.

Most people, when they fill out the enrolment form at the start, write things like “to get fit”, “to reduce stress” as their reasons for joining up. After a short while, however, people tell me that they come to class just as much for social reasonsas for health reasons. Each class is like a small community. It is unique. Each person is important. If someone isn’t there one week, we miss them and the class feels different. By sharing a common goal like learning a routine, we also share our joys and frustrations and, in the process, get to know and care for each other.

I found this quote of Alfred Lord Tennyson that seems to sum things up beautifully:

“I am part of all I have met”
