Tai Chi and Fibromyalgia - The Key to Healing Lies Within
I have always wanted to write an article on the benefits of Tai Chi (TC) for health (there are sooooo many!) so given that I have just completed my 1st grading, I thought it would be a good time to put pen to paper and reflect on the past few years.I have lived with Fibromyalgia since 1997. A chronic often debilitating and painful condition affecting connective tissue in the body. I live with constant pain and stiffness in my joints, it also affects my balance, energy levels, sleep and memory. I began TC training a few years ago with Si Hing Albert learning the 24 Form Tai Ji Quan. The benefits to my health have been amazing. I have always said TC is the key to unlocking your health. Many years ago I could not walk or work or have the lifestyle I once knew, it felt like life was passing me by. Finally on the 17 April 2010 after a year of grading classes, discipline and hard work, I passed my first gradingclass. I am so proud of myself and of my grading group. I am also grateful to my daughter Isobella age 10 who every Monday night comes to class with me. She wrote out some pink hugs and kisses cards to share with the group on Saturday, because she couldn’t be there in person, but in spirit she was there. I believe any disability can be turned into great ability with this ancient Chinese martial arts exercise system -- and that with patience, perseverance and discipline, dis-ease can become ease within your body, getting relief from fibromyalgia, pain and fatigue and that your weaknesses can become your strengths. I would encourage anyone thinking about starting Tai Chi, or taking that next step towards grading that “yes you can do it!” it will be the key to unlocking great health and happiness, a wonderful gift to yourself!, in releasing the limitations of the past you may set yourself free to fly. Note: I am now preparing for my next grading sometime in the near future with more confidence and determination. Thank you Golden Lion and especially Si Hing Albert. Thanks to Marie Trask, TC student, for this contribution.
